About this place

Church of Saint Margaret in Bludovice

The Church of Saint Margaret is a historic parish church in the Bludovice district of Havířov, in the Karviná District of Czech Silesia. The building belongs to the Havířov parish within the Karviná deanery of the Diocese of Ostrava-Opava, and has been listed as a protected cultural monument in the Czech Republic since 1974.

How old is the parish in Bludovice?

The parish in Bludovice is first documented in a 1335 record of Peter's Pence payments, with a further mention surviving from 1447, making it one of the older parish communities in this part of Cieszyn Silesia. During the Reformation the church was held by Protestants until 1654, when it returned to Catholic administration.

When was the current stone church built?

The stone building seen today replaced an earlier wooden church that stood on the same site. The foundation stone was laid on 13 July 1786, and the completed church was consecrated on 18 November 1792, dedicated jointly to Saint Margaret and Saint Michael. The project owed the most to parish priest Šebastián Piskoř, a native of Frýdek who led the parish from 1772 to 1792 and is buried beneath the main altar.

Who built the church?

Construction was carried out by master mason Krečmer of Frýdek. After his death, the work was completed by another master mason, Reinoch of Paskov. The result is a single-nave, late Baroque brick church with a semicircular apse closing the chancel — a form typical of rural parish churches in the region from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.

What can visitors expect today?

The Church of Saint Margaret remains an active parish church, serving the joint parish of Havířov, Bludovice and Prostřední Suchá. Its plain, unified late-Baroque form is a recognizable landmark of Bludovice, a district in the northern part of Havířov. The monument-protection listing dating to 1974 reflects its recognized historical and architectural value.
