About this place
The Church of Saint Lawrence is a brick parish church standing in the middle of the old cemetery in Ruda nad Moravou, in the Olomouc Region of Moravia, Czech Republic. The current building dates from the late 18th century and has long served as the architectural landmark of the municipality, visible from afar thanks to its distinctive tower.
What is the history behind the church?
A church and parish already existed on this site at the beginning of the 14th century, but parish life was interrupted by the destruction of the Thirty Years' War. The parish was only re-established in 1676. The present brick church was built much later, in 1784, on the initiative of Prince Alois Josef of Liechtenstein, who had a new building erected on the site of the older structure, in the middle of the cemetery. The new church, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, was consecrated in 1806.
What does the architecture look like?
Two years after the walls were completed, in 1786, a four-sided wooden tower was added on the western side, giving the building the silhouette it still has today. The interior is kept simple, with smoothly plastered walls and a prominent cornice running around the nave. Stained-glass windows fill the space with coloured light. The centerpiece of the furnishings is the main altar, which holds a painting of the church's patron, Saint Lawrence, set within a massive, smooth wooden frame. The painting was created by Ignaz Dullinger.
What role does the church play today?
The building still functions as the parish church of Ruda nad Moravou, a parish that also covers the surrounding settlements, including Hostice. Because of its central position within the cemetery and its history stretching back to the Middle Ages, the church remains an important landmark and a point of local identity. Its tower can be seen from many spots in the surrounding countryside, making it a natural reference point for anyone exploring this part of the Olomouc Region.
What else is nearby?
The municipality of Ruda nad Moravou brings together several smaller settlements, including Bartoňov, Radomilov, Hrabenov, Hostice, and Štědrákova Lhota. The surrounding area is largely rural, with hiking trails running along the Morava river valley, making it an appealing destination for visitors looking for a quiet combination of countryside walks and local sacred architecture.
