About this place
The Church of Saint Barbara is a small Baroque church tucked into the greenery of Jiráskovy sady park in Šumperk, a short walk from the historic town centre. Modest on the outside, it holds one of the more unusual fresco cycles in the Olomouc region, and a history tied to the town's former municipal cemetery.
When was it built, and by whom?
Construction was completed in 1753, based on designs by Anton Scholz, a master mason working in Šumperk. The church was raised on the grounds of the town's old municipal cemetery, established in 1606 and used until 1896 — which explains its original role as a funeral chapel for the town's residents. Nothing of the cemetery itself survives today; a public park now covers the site.
What's inside worth seeing?
The main draw is the ceiling fresco cycle painted in 1755 by Ignác Oderlický, an artist from nearby Uničov. The composition combines three scenes: a central Crucifixion of Christ, an episode recalling a plague epidemic that struck Šumperk (featuring the local dean Dittrich), and a panoramic view of the town with its founder, Z. Dresser. A later altar painting was added by Josef Keyl, while the images of the Mother of Sorrows and the Deposition from the Cross are the work of Karl Brachtel. Together they form a coherent Baroque decorative programme, unusually rich for such a small building — worth a slow look to trace all three scenes in turn.
How did the church survive the centuries?
Its history has not been a straight line. In 1784, under Emperor Joseph II's reforms that dissolved many monasteries and churches across the Habsburg lands, the building was closed. It reopened only in 1790, this time strictly as a cemetery chapel. The church underwent repairs in 1853 and again in 1900, after a lightning strike damaged the structure. Since 1958 it has been listed as a Czech cultural monument, which gives it formal heritage protection and ongoing conservation care.
Is it still an active church today?
Yes — regular Roman Catholic Mass is still held here. Despite its modest size, the church remains an active place of worship and a notable stop for anyone interested in Šumperk's religious sites or local art history.
How do you get there?
The church stands inside Jiráskovy sady park, an easy walk from Šumperk's town square — no more than fifteen minutes on foot. Because it sits among mature trees, a visit often doubles as a stroll through the park, especially pleasant in summer when the shade covers the small forecourt in front of the entrance. It's a good addition to a walking tour of Šumperk for travellers looking for something beyond the main square and the château.
