About this place

Church of Saint Joseph in Dubňany

The Church of Saint Joseph in Dubňany is the Roman Catholic parish church of this village near Hodonín in southern Moravia. Standing on the site of an older chapel, it remains both the spiritual and historical focal point of the community.

What is the history behind the church?

The story begins in 1720, when a Baroque chapel was built in the village. A cemetery gradually formed around it, and the chapel became a natural landmark for local residents. In 1843 the village was elevated to parish status, giving the existing place of worship a more prominent role.

A turning point came in 1876: after an unusually harsh winter, the chapel's condition deteriorated sharply, one of its walls began to lean, and the building had to be closed. Following a period of preparation, construction of a new church started in 1885 on the same site, incorporating parts of the older structure. The new church was consecrated on 13 October 1885.

What does the church's architecture look like?

The church is a single-nave building in a historicist-eclectic style, with Romanesque elements dominating the design. It was created by reconstructing the original 1720 Baroque chapel — the presbytery and sacristy from that earlier building were preserved and incorporated into the larger, newer structure. As a result, the church combines traces of eighteenth-century Baroque with nineteenth-century historicism, making it a notable example of a sacred building reshaped in stages over more than a century.

What should visitors know before coming?

The church is wheelchair accessible. It regularly takes part in initiatives that promote sacred architecture and local heritage, including the Noc kostelů (Night of Churches) event and open-church programs showcasing historic sites in the Hodonín region. Because of this, the interior is sometimes accessible during themed events, not only during regular services.

Dubňany lies in a region known for its vineyards and Moravian traditions, so a stop at the Church of Saint Joseph fits naturally into a broader visit to nearby towns in the Hodonín district. The church stands at coordinates 48.922552, 17.109023, in the central part of Dubňany.
