Church of Saint Catherine

Mutěnice, Czechia

About this place

Church of Saint Catherine in Mutěnice is a Roman Catholic parish church in South Moravia, listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Standing at the heart of this village in the Hodonín district, it has served as the community's main house of worship for more than two and a half centuries.

What is the history behind the church?

Mutěnice is first mentioned in written records in 1348, when the village was home to a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller led by a commander. The settlement and its original church suffered heavily during the Hussite Wars, and by the time of the Thirty Years' War the parish and its school had ceased to exist altogether, with the church itself left in ruins.

Reconstruction came through the intervention of Empress Maria Theresa, who as patroness of the Hodonín estate ordered a new parish church built on the site of the derelict building in 1769. Construction finished in 1775, and the church was blessed on Saint Catherine's Day, 25 November 1775 — the origin of its dedication. Formal consecration, however, did not take place until 1940.

How has the building changed over time?

The church's present appearance dates largely from the early 1950s. During that renovation, the original late-Baroque dome was removed and the tower raised by eleven metres, giving the church the tall silhouette visible today. The choir gallery was enlarged, a new sacristy and oratory buildings were added, while the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre that once stood beside the church was torn down.

What can visitors see today?

Sitting in the centre of Mutěnice, the church functions as a landmark for the whole village, its raised tower visible from a distance across the surrounding vineyards typical of this part of South Moravia. As an active parish church, it takes part in the annual Night of Churches (Noc kostelů), when the building opens to visitors beyond its regular Mass schedule. Its status as a protected cultural monument reflects the site's continuous religious use stretching back to the medieval commandery.

How do you get there?

Mutěnice lies in the Hodonín district of the South Moravian Region, close to the Slovak border. The church stands in the village centre and is easy to reach by car or by local public transport from nearby Hodonín.

When is the best time to visit?

The church's patronal feast day, 25 November (Saint Catherine's Day), and the yearly Night of Churches are the two occasions when the building is most accessible to visitors outside regular services. Otherwise, the parish Mass schedule published by the local parish governs opening times.
