About this place

Church of Saint Giles in Strmilov

The Church of Saint Giles is a three-nave church standing on the south side of the main square in Strmilov, a small town in South Bohemia, in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands region of the Czech Republic. The building stands out for its consistent late Empire-style architecture, a design rarely preserved in such a pure form in this part of the country, and it remains the town's main parish church.

How old is the parish here?

The parish of Strmilov is first documented in 1376, when it fell under the Diocese of Olomouc — the oldest known record of a church community in the town. The building standing at the time did not survive to the present day unchanged. The town was struck by two major fires, in 1823 and 1835, which badly damaged the earlier church and forced a complete rebuilding.

When was the current building constructed?

The church visible today was built between 1843 and 1849, after both fires. The reconstruction followed the late Empire style throughout, giving the building a unified appearance in which both the overall structure and the architectural details belong to the same period — an unusually consistent execution of the classicist idiom for a church of this size in the region. The building has three naves, a pentagonal presbytery, and a tower positioned on the western side.

What can visitors see inside?

Most of the interior furnishings date from the second half of the 19th century and are executed in a pseudo-Romanesque style, echoing Romanesque forms despite being made much later. The side altars date from 1859. Several older items from before the rebuilding have also survived: a stone baptismal font from 1725 and statues of Saint Theresa and Saint Bernard, both dating from around 1700. Among the oldest preserved objects is a 35-centimeter tin candlestick made in 1596, the oldest surviving piece of the church's furnishings.

What is notable about the church tower?

The tower rises 33 meters and serves as the main architectural landmark of the square's southern side in Strmilov. In the second half of the 20th century, the church façade was renovated and the tower was fitted with a new clock mechanism, including automatic control of the bell ringing. As a result, the tower functions both as a visual landmark and as a working timepiece for the town.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands right in the center of Strmilov, on the south side of the main square, surrounded by the small-town architecture typical of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. It is easy to find for anyone exploring the square and the surrounding streets, as the tall tower makes it visible from most points on the square.
