About this place

Church of Saint Giles in Bulhary

The Church of Saint Giles is a Roman Catholic parish church standing in Bulhary, a small village in the Břeclav District of the South Moravian Region in southern Czechia, close to the Austrian border. Listed as a protected cultural monument, the church remains the village's most visible landmark and still serves as its active parish church.

How old is the church history in Bulhary?

The earliest trace of church life in Bulhary dates back to 1414, when the Liechtenstein land register mentions a local dean — a hint that the village may already have had its own church at that time. Whether that early building survived is uncertain: in 1426 Bulhary was burned by Hussite troops, and the church may well have been destroyed along with the rest of the village.

The first confirmed record of a church in Bulhary comes from 1582. At that time it was a late Gothic building, consecrated together with an adjoining cemetery by the Bishop of Olomouc, Stanislav Pavlovský. That cemetery no longer exists today.

Where does the current Baroque building come from?

The church visitors see today is considerably younger than the first recorded one. A new single-nave Baroque church was built between 1769 and 1772, designed by architect Jan Karel Hromádka. It replaced the earlier Gothic building and has served as the center of the Bulhary parish ever since.

What does the church look like today?

The Church of Saint Giles is a late Baroque single-nave building with a semicircular chancel. Its most distinctive feature is a tower projecting forward from the main facade, giving the church a recognizable vertical accent visible from much of the village. Inside, the organ case from 1783 stands out — built for an organ made by organ builder Jan Výmola, it is one of the few surviving pieces of the church's original Baroque furnishings.

Who is this church worth visiting for?

The Church of Saint Giles in Bulhary suits travelers exploring South Moravia who are looking for authentic, rural sacred architecture away from the main tourist routes. It combines well with visits to the surrounding villages of the Břeclav District, an area best known for its vineyards and the Pálava landscape.
