About this place
The Church of Saint Gall in Štolmíř is a Baroque parish church located in a district of Český Brod, a town in Central Bohemia not far from Kolín. It is one of the region's lesser-known but genuinely impressive religious buildings — a large structure with a richly furnished interior, even though its exterior has struggled with neglect for years.
How do you get there?
Štolmíř lies within the administrative boundaries of Český Brod, roughly an hour from Prague by car or train. The easiest way is to take a train to the Český Brod station and continue on foot or by local bus into the district itself. The church stands at the center of Štolmíř and is easy to spot thanks to its distinctive domed silhouette.
What is the history behind the building?
The current church was built between 1710 and 1750 as a single-nave Baroque structure. Its construction is credited to Kristián Minedum, an experienced master mason known for other religious buildings in the Central Bohemian region. The entrance façade is divided by pilasters and features a portal and window, topped with a scroll gable — a typical element of Baroque architecture from that period.
What can you see inside?
The interior surprises visitors with its vaulting: the presbytery is covered with an elliptical vault, while the main nave is topped with a dome resting on pendentives. This construction gives the space a sense of scale rarely found in small, rural churches of the region.
The main altar dates back to the early Baroque period and is attributed to 1688. The altar painting depicting Saint Gall arrived in Štolmíř in 1756, having previously belonged to the monastery in Sázava. Along with the painting, a historically valuable organ was brought to the church — built in the very same year, 1688, by the respected organ builder Hans Heinrich Mundt, originally also for the Sázava monastery. According to local sources, the altar in the Church of Saint Gall ranks among the tallest found in churches across Bohemia, making the interior stand out within the region.
It's worth knowing that the church has been in very poor technical condition for years. Cracks run through the walls and vaults, much of the wooden roof structure has rotted due to leaks in the roofing, and the western façade is at risk of gradual collapse — some windows are missing panes or have been boarded up. The building has also been robbed on several occasions. Despite this, regular services have been restored and now take place every second Wednesday of the month at 6 PM.
When should you visit?
Given the building's technical condition and limited opening hours, it's best to plan a visit around a scheduled service or check current information with the Roman Catholic parish in Český Brod, which administers the church. Outside these times, access to the interior can be difficult, though the exterior and surrounding area remain accessible year-round.
