About this place
Church of Saint Bartholomew stands at the heart of Vyšší Brod, a small monastery town in South Bohemia, right beside the walls of the former Cistercian abbey. The church sits in the middle of a cemetery at the upper, southern end of the main square, within the town's protected heritage zone.
How old is the church?
A church already stood here before 1259, the year its parish was formally founded, on June 1. Since 1264 the building has been under the patronage of the Cistercian monastery of Vyšší Brod, a link still visible in its furnishings today. The oldest, early Gothic portion dates from the 1260s and 1270s: a remnant of the original square chancel without buttresses survives from this period, along with a double triumphal arch that now forms the base of the tower.
What happened during the Hussite wars?
The church suffered heavy damage during the Hussite wars and was not rebuilt until the 16th century. A further major reconstruction followed in 1643, when the nave was finished with a wooden ceiling and the renewed altar was reconsecrated on October 25. During the 17th century the originally flat ceiling was replaced with vaulting, and in 1715 a sacristy was added on the north side.
What is inside the church?
The interior consists of a four-bay nave with the sacristy attached to the north. Its centerpiece is a wooden Baroque altar from 1761, consecrated on June 28 of that year; the painting of St. Bartholomew above it was repainted in 1858. Statues of two Cistercian saints, Bernard and Benedict, flank the altar columns, underlining the parish's monastic ties. A side altar on the north holds an 18th-century sculpture of the Scourged Christ, and the church also preserves a 1777 Nativity scene donated by artillery captain Franz Fünfkirchner.
What changed in more recent centuries?
The church tower was rebuilt in 1864, window painting was completed in 1904, and electric lighting was installed in 1905. The parish was substantial in the late 19th century: in 1870 it comprised 378 houses and 3,636 Catholic residents spread across 21 surrounding settlements.
Can visitors go inside?
The church is regularly open for Sunday morning services. At other times, visitors can look into the interior through the grille of the west portal, while the surrounding cemetery grounds are usually freely accessible.
