Church of Saint Anne (Staré Město pod Sněžníkem)

Staré Město, Czechia

About this place

St. Anne's Church in Staré Město pod Sněžníkem is a Renaissance-Baroque church located in the Šumperk District of the Olomouc Region, in the northeastern Czech Republic, at the foot of the Kralický Sněžník massif. The building is a protected heritage site, listed as a Czech cultural monument since 1964.

When was the church built?

The church was built in 1617–1618 on the site of an older church, about which little is known beyond the fact that it once stood there. According to tradition, the building was funded by Eliška Petřvaldská of Petřvald, with the initiative reportedly coming from the Jesuit Father Jan Schmidtlin, who had been leading Catholic missions on the Kolštejn estate since 1615. The builder is believed to have been Antonio Thoma, who ran a construction workshop in nearby Velké Losiny.

What architectural style does it show?

The church combines Renaissance and Baroque features, with Empire-style elements added during a rebuilding in 1689. One notable difference from other Renaissance churches in the district — such as those in Velké Losiny, Branná, and Sobotín, which use barrel vaulting — is that this church has a cross vault, a solution similar to the one used in the church at Bratrušov. This sets it apart architecturally from its regional neighbors of the same period.

What stands out from the outside?

The most striking feature is the main tower, which rises to a height of 48 metres and dominates the skyline of Staré Město pod Sněžníkem. It is one of the taller architectural landmarks in this part of the Šumperk District, visible from a considerable distance against the surrounding foothill landscape.

What role does the church play today?

St. Anne's remains an active place of worship. Every year, on the feast day of its patron saint, a pilgrimage celebration (poutní slavnost) takes place here, drawing worshippers from the surrounding area and continuing a long-standing local pilgrimage tradition.

Why is this church worth noting?

The church is an example of sacred architecture from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries in Moravia, blending Italian Renaissance influence — reflected in the builder's ties to the Velké Losiny workshop — with local construction solutions. Its status as a cultural monument since 1964 confirms its historical and architectural significance at a national level.
