About this place
The Church of Saint Wenceslaus in Horní Lipová, part of the municipality of Lipová-lázně in the Jeseník district, Olomouc Region, is the only church in the entire Jesenicko area dedicated to this saint. Standing at the foot of the Jeseníky Mountains, it is one of the few surviving examples in the region of Josephine-era church architecture — buildings raised in large numbers under Emperor Joseph II's programme of new parish foundations.
When was the church built?
The foundation stone was laid on 10 May 1787, and the finished building was consecrated on 2 November 1788 — construction therefore took a little over a year. The church was built on the initiative of Emperor Joseph II as part of his church reforms, which aimed to bring pastoral care to communities living far from existing parishes. It was precisely because of these Josephine reforms that Horní Lipová gained its own independent parish during the later decades of the 1700s, and this church was raised to serve it.
What architectural style does the church represent?
The building is a modest, single-nave neoclassical structure — a typical example of the so-called Josephine church type, built to simplified, standardised plans approved by the imperial authorities, without the elaborate decoration typical of earlier Baroque foundations. The entrance facade is marked by a squat but solid tower, flanked on both sides by staircase annexes. This layout — a tower framed by symmetrical side extensions — is characteristic of churches raised during this period across Silesia and Moravia. Inside the entrance hall, a commemorative plaque honouring Emperor Joseph II as the founder of the building has survived, reminding visitors of the circumstances of its construction.
Why is the dedication to Saint Wenceslaus significant here?
The church in Horní Lipová is the only one in the whole Jesenicko region dedicated to Saint Wenceslaus, the patron saint of Bohemia. This unique dedication gives the building particular significance, not only for the local community but also within the historical parish structure of the entire deanery — no other church in the vicinity shares the same patron saint.
Which parish and diocese does the church belong to?
The church serves as the parish church of the Roman Catholic Parish of Lipová-lázně, part of the Jeseník deanery within the Diocese of Ostrava-Opava. Despite its modest size, it remains an active place of worship, serving the faithful of Horní Lipová and the surrounding villages belonging to the parish.
Where exactly is the church located?
The church stands in Horní Lipová, a village that forms part of the municipality of Lipová-lázně, in the scenic surroundings of the Jeseníky Mountains in the Olomouc Region, close to the border with Poland. Its geographic coordinates are approximately 50.226° north latitude and 17.130° east longitude, placing it within easy reach for visitors exploring the Jeseníky range and the nearby Lipová-lázně spa town.
