About this place

Church of Saint Anne, Kostelec nad Orlicí

The Church of Saint Anne is a Baroque cemetery church standing east of the former town walls of Kostelec nad Orlicí, in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. Modest in size, it is one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in the town and has served as its funerary chapel for over three centuries.

What stood on this site before the current church?

The site's history goes back to 1572, when a bequest from a local townsman funded a cemetery together with a small chapel here. For more than a hundred years it served the town as a place of burial, before the decision was made to replace it with a larger, permanent stone church on the same spot.

When was the present church built, and who paid for it?

Today's church was built between 1686 and 1691, funded by Count František Záruba of Hustířany, who owned nearby estates. It took the compact, understated form typical of early Baroque architecture — modest in ornament, but designed with a clear purpose: a cemetery church meant to serve the whole town.

What surrounds the church?

A stone wall encloses the cemetery grounds around the church, forming a defined, walled precinct. In its southeastern corner stands a small, six-sided chapel dedicated to Saint Florian, built as part of the same enclosure. In the northeastern corner, a mortuary was added in the 19th century, used to hold remains exhumed during later burials on the site.

What can visitors see inside?

The interior is covered by a vaulted ceiling whose segments rest on wall pillars, which in turn divide the space into six shallow, niche-like chapels running along the walls. These niches hold epitaphs and memorial tablets of past residents of Kostelec and the surrounding nobility. Among the surviving pieces is the tombstone of K. Záruba, dated 1659 — evidence that the founder's family had ties to this site even before the current church was built.

What makes the surrounding cemetery notable?

The cemetery around the church is among the oldest in town and holds several tombstones by respected sculptors, with names such as Stanislav Sucharda, Sendtner, and Quido Kocián associated with monuments here. Together with the church's architecture, these works draw not only worshippers but also visitors interested in funerary art.
