About this place
The Church of Saint Anne stands in Kukleny, a district on the western edge of Hradec Králové that only became part of the city in 1942. It is a modest building, but one with a genuinely eventful backstory tied to a forced relocation of the Minorite friars in the late 18th century.
Why does this church stand in Kukleny at all?
The story starts long before the current building existed. The Minorites had run a monastery with a hospital in Hradec Králové since 1344, originally on an island in the Elbe, roughly where today's May 5th Square lies. When the city expanded its fortifications between 1776 and 1778, Emperor Joseph II ordered the old church demolished. The friars held their final service there on May 31, and demolition began right after. The Blessed Sacrament and a Gothic baptismal font — the work of Ondřej Ptáček from the 15th century — were quietly moved to Kukleny.
The cornerstone of the new monastic complex was laid on July 2, 1777, and by November 15, 1778, the presbytery was already consecrated and holding services, even before the whole complex was finished in 1784. The church was designed by Matouš Walch, while the adjoining monastery building was the work of J. Kerner. The Minorite community itself did not last long here: in 1789, as part of Emperor Joseph II's church reforms, the order was dissolved. The church stayed in use as a parish church, and part of the former cloister was turned into a school.
What should you look for on the façade and inside?
The late Baroque building has a distinctive twin-tower front façade and a single-nave, rectangular floor plan oriented toward the north. On the south side, a right-angled portal is set with niches holding statues of three saints: St. Anne with Mary, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Francis Xavier. Inside, the main altar carries an illusionistic painting from 1779, the work of Josef Kramolín.
It's worth knowing that a reconstruction in the 1990s changed the complex substantially, so today's structure carries a lot of modern character rather than looking like an untouched 18th-century monument. The complex has been listed as a cultural monument since 1964, but it is currently run by the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (the Salesian Sisters), who operate it as a dormitory for female secondary school students. In practice, that means the interior is not open the way a regular parish church would be — worth factoring in before planning a visit.
How do you get there, and when is the best time?
Kukleny sits on the western edge of Hradec Králové, along the old road to Prague, so it's a short ride from the city center — a few minutes by car or public transport. It pairs well with a walk through the historic core of Hradec Králové itself, home to the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and the White Tower, a few kilometers away. Because the building now functions as a school dormitory, a weekday afternoon tends to be the calmest time to view the façade and surroundings without disrupting daily life there.
Frequently asked questions
Can you go inside the Church of Saint Anne? The building currently serves as a dormitory run by the Salesian Sisters, so interior access is limited and it doesn't function as a typical church open to visitors.
Why is the church in Kukleny rather than central Hradec Králové? Because the original Minorite monastery, dating back to 1344, had to make way for new city fortifications in the late 1770s — the friars and the church's furnishings were relocated to Kukleny instead.
What's the most notable architectural feature? The twin-tower south façade with niche statues of saints, along with the illusionistic 1779 main altar painting by Josef Kramolín.
When did Kukleny become part of Hradec Králové? In 1942 — before that, Kukleny had held the status of an independent town since 1931.
