About this place

Church of Our Lady Mother of the Church is a modern filial church in Březina, a small municipality in the Brno-venkov District of the South Moravian Region in the Czech Republic. The building stands in Proseč, part of the Březina municipality, and belongs to the parish of nearby Křtiny.

How do you get there?

Březina lies in the South Moravian Region, in the Brno-venkov District, close to the well-known pilgrimage site of Křtiny, whose parish administers the church. The easiest way to reach it by public transport is bus line 201 (IDS JMK network) to the Táborská stop, followed by a roughly 650-metre walk into the village centre. The church has step-free access, making it reachable for visitors with limited mobility.

What is the history behind this church?

Both Březina and Proseč once had their own small bell-tower chapels, known locally as "zvonice." The one in Březina stood on the site of today's municipal office and was demolished in 1912. The older bell tower in Proseč survived until 1891, when a wealthy local resident, Pavel Malota, originally from Tovačov, paid out of his own pocket to have it rebuilt into a chapel with an altar. The current church came much later, built between 1993 and 1995 as a new place of worship serving both villages together.

What makes this church distinctive?

The dedication to "Mother of the Church" is an unusual Marian title, rarely found in the region's sacred architecture. Inside, the church is defined by artistic stained-glass windows that wrap around three sides of the building, depicting the theme of Mary's protective mantle — some sections are shaped to resemble angel wings. Because parts of the glass are semi-transparent, the interior stays visually connected to the surrounding landscape, while light filtering through the windows gives the space a warm, golden glow. Near the tabernacle, an eternal light is formed by a coloured disc designed to evoke a sunrise.

When are services held?

Regular Mass is celebrated on Sundays at 9:00 and on Wednesdays at 17:00, year-round. It's worth checking the current schedule with the Křtiny parish before visiting, since times can shift around major pilgrimage dates tied to the nearby shrine.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and summer make for pleasant visits, with longer days allowing a walk through Proseč and Březina combined with a trip to nearby Křtiny. Autumn tends to be quieter, which suits travelers looking for a calmer visit away from the pilgrim crowds that gather at the neighbouring shrine.
