About this place
Church of the Holy Trinity in Drnholec is a late Baroque parish church that has shaped the skyline of this small town in the Břeclav district, in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, since the mid-18th century. Despite its modest size, the building has a history that reaches back centuries before its current form was built.
What is the history of the church?
The site has hosted a place of worship since the Middle Ages: a parish church dedicated to Saint Martin, first recorded in written sources in 1237. That earlier building was a modest single-nave Romanesque structure with a tower, standing just north of today's church. By the mid-18th century, the aging medieval church could no longer serve the growing parish, prompting the construction of a larger replacement.
The foundation stone of the new church was laid on 12 May 1750, and construction continued until 1757, when the building was consecrated. The design came from architect František Antonín Grimm, active in Moravia during the late Baroque period.
What does the architecture look like?
The church is built on a cross-shaped plan and its proportions are notable: 36 metres long, 11 metres wide, and 21 metres high. Its style is described as Baroque with French influence, using simplified architectural forms that already hint at the more restrained, classicizing taste later associated with the reign of Louis XVI.
The layout follows a single-nave, oriented design: a rectangular nave slightly widened on its sides by short transept-like arms, closed to the east by a presbytery with angled corners. Flanking the presbytery are rectangular annexes housing the sacristy and a chapel, with oratories located above on the upper floor.
What can visitors see inside?
The main altar is the centerpiece of the interior, carrying rich sculptural decoration by Ondřej Schweigel. At its center hangs a painting of the Holy Trinity by Josef Stern, an 18th-century painter active across Moravia. On either side of the painting stand statues of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the missionary brothers venerated as patrons of Moravia and creators of the first Slavic script.
Was the church damaged during the war?
Yes. The church suffered serious damage in 1945, when the front line of the Second World War passed through the area near the war's end. The damage was repaired during a reconstruction carried out between 1950 and 1951, restoring the building's Baroque character.
