About this place
Chlum is a modest but rewarding hilltop on the eastern edge of Pilsen (Plzeň), right next to the Doubravka district, reaching 416 metres above sea level. It's a classic half-day escape for locals and visitors who want a sweeping view of the city without leaving the area.
What's on top of the hill?
The summit is crowned by a stone lookout tower dating from 1929, funded through a public collection organised by the Czechoslovak Labour Tourist Union. The tower stands 25 metres tall, and 121 stone steps lead up to the viewing platform at 22 metres. Since 2001 it has been a protected cultural monument, and today it's looked after by the Bolevec branch of the Czech Tourist Club (KČT).
The climb pays off with a 360-degree panorama: the rooftops and rivers of Pilsen spread out below, and on a clear day the view stretches to the Bohemian Forest (Šumava), the Český les range, the Brdy hills, the Rokycany area, and even as far as the peaks of Přimda and Čerchov near the German border.
How do you get to Chlum?
On foot is the easiest option. A marked trail (red and green signs), about 1.5 kilometres long, runs mostly through forest from the Doubravka bus stop on Zabělská street — an easy, family-friendly walk with no steep sections. Drivers can also use the road connecting Doubravka and Újezd, which leads almost all the way to the tower; the final stretch has to be done on foot.
What else should you know before visiting?
The tower sits in a quiet patch of forest with a rest area, a small food stand, and a playground, making the spot a good stop for a picnic after coming down from the platform. The tower is open daily throughout summer, and the surrounding area occasionally hosts local cultural events organised by the tourist club.
Chlum works well as a short add-on to a Pilsen city visit — it's only a short bus ride from the centre plus a brief walk to reach the base of the hill.
