The outer wall and the keep are believed to date from the 14th century, from the period when the fortress passed permanently into Castilian hands, while the inner enclosure may go back, according to some researchers, to Roman times.

In 1429 the castle was home to Íñigo López de Mendoza, Marquis of Santillana, who served as captain of the Castilian border troops stationed here. One of the most important poets of the Spanish Middle Ages, he wrote part of his famous "Serranillas" while at Vozmediano — short poems inspired by encounters with mountain women of the Moncayo range.

The castle was declared a Historical-Artistic Monument on 22 April 1949, and it is regarded as the best-preserved fortress of the old Aragonese-Castilian border in the Moncayo area.
