Castle of Mejorada

Mejorada Castle rises above the small town of Mejorada in the province of Toledo, in Spain's Castilla-La Mancha region, close to Talavera de la Reina.

Where did this fortress come from?

The story begins in the late 13th century. On 9 July 1288, King Sancho IV granted the village and lands of Mejorada to a Castilian knight, Juan García de Toledo, making him the first lord of the estate. The fortress was raised as a statement of that new lordship, giving its owners a base from which to assert their privileges against the pretensions of the town council of Talavera. Over time the castle became the clearest symbol of noble power standing against the ecclesiastical authority of Talavera.

What does the castle look like today?

Most of what still stands dates from the mid-14th to the early 15th century. The stronghold was laid out on a square plan, with round towers anchoring each corner and a rectangular keep built into one of its walls. Through the 15th and 16th centuries, successive owners reshaped the fortress repeatedly, adapting it to changing defensive and residential needs.

The castle's fortunes turned once its lords married into other noble houses holding larger, more prestigious estates elsewhere. Mejorada stopped serving as a seigneurial residence, and the building slowly slipped into decay; by the 19th century it stood in an advanced state of ruin.

Archaeological digs have been carried out on the site since 1997, uncovering a good deal of its structure — in particular the remains of remodeling done at the end of the 15th and the start of the 16th century. Today the fortress survives as a ruin: the eastern and southern walls remain the best preserved, along with sections of the northern and western walls.
