Castle of Huizingen

Huizingen, Belgium

About this place

Castle of Huizingen is a 16th-century mansion set within a sprawling landscape park, located in the municipality of Beersel, in the Flemish Brabant province of Belgium. Today it forms the heart of a provincial recreational estate that blends historic architecture with green space open to residents and visitors alike.

How far back does the history of this place go?

The earliest records of the Huizingen settlement date back to 1491. In 1540, the estate passed to Pierre de Boisot, but the building was soon destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt in 1545, and its next owner was Charles de Boisot — a nobleman and freedom fighter, a trusted associate of William of Orange, who died fighting against Spanish King Philip II. This episode ties the castle to one of the pivotal chapters of Dutch history: the revolt against Habsburg Spain.

Over the following centuries the building changed hands and functions several times, until in 1875 the estate was purchased by Albert Vaucamps. It was Vaucamps who gave the castle its current character — the originally modest, U-shaped structure was modernized in Flemish Neo-Renaissance style, expanded, and partly rebuilt into a roughly square layout.

Where did the surrounding park come from?

Albert Vaucamps is also responsible for the park surrounding the castle — he laid it out across roughly 90 hectares, tracing 12 kilometers of walking paths through mature trees and ponds. The English-style landscape park was designed to enhance the picturesque setting of the mansion and give visitors space to stroll.

In 1958, a rock garden was added within the estate — an alpine garden spanning about 52,000 square meters, one of the domain's most distinctive features, combining mountain vegetation with rocky landscaping in the otherwise flat terrain of Brabant.

Who manages the castle today?

Since 2016, the entire estate has been owned by the province of Vlaams-Brabant (Flemish Brabant). This allows the grounds to operate as a public provincial park — Provinciedomein Huizingen — combining recreational use with the preservation of valuable natural and architectural heritage. The castle building itself now serves commercial and event purposes, hosting meetings, conferences, and celebrations, while the surrounding park remains open to the public.

What can visitors expect when exploring Huizingen?

Visitors can enjoy several attractions combined in one location: the historic Neo-Renaissance castle building, extensive green grounds with numerous walking trails, and the aforementioned rock garden, which stands out against the region's typically flat landscape. This combination makes the Huizingen estate popular both with history and architecture enthusiasts and with those simply looking for a peaceful spot for a walk or a picnic surrounded by greenery.
