The castle ruins occupy a hilltop in the hamlet of El Castillo, part of the municipality of Riello, in the historic Omaña district of León province. This is a quiet, mountainous corner of the region, well off the main tourist routes - for many visitors, that absence of crowds is exactly what makes the detour worthwhile.

What will you see?

The fortress is built on a triangular ground plan, a layout shaped by the contours of the hill it sits on; it's said to be one of only two Spanish castles built to this design. Of the original structure, a trapezoidal keep of stone and mortar survives, along with scattered stretches of defensive wall running down the hillside. From up here, the view opens onto the Omaña valleys, framed by the rugged mountain scenery typical of this part of León.

What is the history behind it?

The site's story starts in Roman times, when a fort here oversaw gold-mining operations in the Omaña valley, worked until the 3rd century AD. The name "castro de Benal" already appears in a document from 1366, in which King Henry II of Trastámara granted the stronghold to Juan González Bazán. In 1375 it passed to Diego Fernández de Quiñones, who inherited it from his father - making it the first family stronghold of the Quiñones, later Lords of Luna. Diego expanded and reinforced the castle, giving it the name "Atenar". By the late 19th century the building had been partly dismantled, its stone reused to build a nearby road. It wasn't until 2023 that the Riello town council, together with the León Provincial Council, carried out restoration and consolidation work on the remaining walls, turning the castle into one of the region's tourist draws.

When should you visit?

Given the mountain climate of this part of León, late spring through early autumn is the best window for a visit, when conditions favor walking the hillside and taking in the exposed ruins. Winters here tend to be cold and windy, which makes a longer stay among the open walls less comfortable.
