Castle Kokšín

Castle Kokšín is the ruin of a medieval fortified site on a low hill above the right bank of the Úhlava River, about 750 meters northwest of the village of Kokšín, part of the Švihov municipality in the Klatovy district of the Czech Republic. The site has been protected as a cultural monument for decades, yet its history remains largely a mystery — it is not mentioned in a single surviving written source.

Who built it, and when?

Nobody knows for certain who built the stronghold or exactly when. Since the site never appears in historical documents, researchers rely entirely on archaeological finds, which point to occupation during the 15th and early 16th centuries. It is assumed that an unknown nobleman built it, and that at some point in the 15th century it was acquired by Půta Švihovský z Rýzmberka, then lord of nearby Švihov, who is thought to have folded it into the defenses of his own residence.

What was its purpose?

Everything points to Kokšín having served as a forward outpost for the water castle at Švihov — a small lookout and defensive point guarding the approaches to the main seat of the lords. It may also have had an economic role alongside its military one; a trapezoid-shaped terrace on the south side of the site is interpreted as a former farmyard.

What remains is mostly the stone foundations of a two-room residential tower, built at the highest point of the hill — largely ground-floor masonry today. The site is still ringed by traces of a moat and an earthen rampart, typical defensive features of small strongholds of this kind. The ruin has been listed as a cultural monument since 1964.
