Castillo de Ciria

Castillo de Ciria stands above the village of Ciria, in the province of Soria, in the Campo de Gómara region of Castile and León. The fortress occupies a rocky outcrop at roughly 1,080 metres above sea level, overlooking the gorge of the Manubles river — historically one of the key passages linking Castile with Aragon.

What is the history behind the castle?

A defensive structure has stood on this spot since the 10th century, with Arab origins: the current fortress was raised over an earlier, smaller Muslim stronghold that guarded the river gorge. Because of its position on the Castilian-Aragonese frontier, Castillo de Ciria was drawn into border disputes between the two kingdoms for centuries. It was through this pass that Henry of Trastámara is said to have entered Castile in his struggle against his half-brother, Peter I "the Cruel". In 1395, King Henry III "the Sufferer" handed the fortress to Juan Hurtado de Mendoza, along with the nearby strongholds of Ágreda, Vozmediano and Borovia. In 1430, the king of Aragon seized both Ciria and Borovia; the castles only returned to Castilian hands after the peace agreement signed in Naples in 1437 between Aragon, Castile and Navarre.

What will you see on site?

A substantial stretch of the curtain wall survives, topped by more than thirty crenellations with a distinctive diamond-point finish. Up to ten arrow slits are still visible along the wall, underlining the building's defensive purpose. Although incomplete, the ruins let visitors trace the original layout of the fortification and its role as a lookout over the Manubles valley and the historic route between two medieval kingdoms.
