Castell de Vicfred

Castell de Vicfred is a former frontier castle turned manor house, standing in the hamlet of Vicfred, part of the municipality of Sant Guim de la Plana in the La Segarra region (province of Lleida, Catalonia).

Where exactly is the castle located?

The building sits on a plateau that separates the river basins of the Llobregós and the Sió. Vicfred itself is a tiny settlement of around 40 residents, administratively belonging to Sant Guim de la Plana. This watershed position was no accident: in the Middle Ages the boundary between the County of Urgell and the County of Cardona ran through this stretch of land, and the castle stood guard over that frontier.

What is the history behind the castle?

The fortress is first documented in 1079, appearing under the name Bechfred in a will drawn up by a certain Ramon Mir. After the Mir family, ownership passed to the Ribelles lineage, a family of frontier castellans. By 1179 the castle belonged to Gombau de Ribelles, married to Marquesa de Cabrera, lady of Montsonís.

The Ribelles family and its descendants held the castle until the mid-14th century, when it passed to the House of Cardona. In December 1375, King Peter the Ceremonious established the County of Cardona, and the castle of Vicfred is named in the royal charter that created it. The Cardona family, later linked by marriage to the House of Medinaceli, kept the estate until feudal lordships were abolished in the 19th century. The property became privately owned in 1998 and was restored.

What does the castle look like today?

Despite its medieval origins, the building visible today is chiefly a grand 18th-century manor house. It was substantially rebuilt around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, incorporating surviving medieval structures into the new design. The year 1700 is carved into both the entrance door and one of the windows, the clearest physical trace of that renovation.

Inside, the house holds a sizeable collection of paintings, tapestries, weapons, musical instruments and period clothing. The ground floor still preserves the old stables, a dungeon cut directly into the rock, and the cellar. Local tradition also tells of a secret escape passage said to run for as much as 2 kilometres.
