Castell de Sentmenat

Castell de Sentmenat is a medieval fortress in the town of Sentmenat, in the Vallès Occidental region, roughly 30 km north of Barcelona. Little remains of its original fortifications today, but the site is listed as a cultural asset of national interest and stands among the oldest traces of feudal settlement in this part of Catalonia.

What is the history behind the castle?

Construction began around 1030 under the knight Miró d'Hostoles, shortly after he acquired the surrounding allodial lands in 1013. The earliest written record of the fortress dates to 1065. By 1083, rights and revenues over the castle's territory passed to Guillem and Albert Ramon de Montcada, who paid Countess Mafalda for them. From 1101 the seneschal Guillem Ramon II de Montcada held the castle, and the Montcada line kept control until the mid-12th century, when the Sentmenat family took over as vassals of the Montcadas.

The following centuries brought disputes over ownership. In 1301 the fortress passed to Bearnèsia, who married Bernat de Centelles, sparking a long conflict with the Sentmenat family. The dispute was finally settled in 1380, when Pere de Sentmenat bought back the castle and its territory from Eimeric II, lord of Centelles, for 9,000 pounds. In the 15th century the Sentmenat family became lords and barons of the area, holding what was known as "mer i mixt imperi" — full civil and criminal jurisdiction over the entire territory. In 1691, King Charles II granted Joan de Sentmenat i de Toralla the title of Marquis of Sentmenat.

From the 17th and 18th centuries onward, the building gradually lost its defensive character and was repurposed as a rural estate house (masia), shedding most of its original fortified features.
