How did this castle come to be here?

The lands of Montfalcó were conquered in 1070 by Count Ermengol IV of Urgell. Soon afterward, construction began on the most defensible point of a small hill, and it was from this spot that the area's first settlers began establishing themselves. The earliest written record of Montfalcó dates to 1163, in a testament by Ramon Barrufell, who left the place to his son-in-law, Arnau de Falconera.

How did the castle's role change over time?

The tower is dated to the 12th or 13th century, though its lower section may belong to an earlier structure — not unusual for fortifications in this region, where successive generations built on top of their predecessors' foundations.
