Castell de Montagut

Castell de Montagut is a medieval fortress standing above Llagostera, a town in Catalonia's Gironès county.

Where is it located?

The ruins sit on the summit of Montagut, part of the Ardenya massif, within the municipality of Llagostera. The site has been declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, underlining its importance to Catalan heritage. Its commanding hilltop position made it a natural lookout over the surrounding plain for centuries.

What remains of the original structure is the lower section of a circular tower along with a stretch of the defensive wall. On the northern side, a wall section adjoining the tower survives, showing arrow slits and a small access doorway. Based on these architectural features, researchers date the construction to the 10th–11th centuries, though by the 14th–15th centuries the site is believed to have functioned only as a watchtower rather than a full defensive residence.

The real reward for reaching the top is the view: a panorama stretching from the Mediterranean coast to the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees, taking in the wide plain where Llagostera, Cassà de la Selva and Girona lie.

How do you get there?

The castle is reached via marked hiking trails crossing the Ardenya massif, starting from around Llagostera, as the site forms part of the area's local trekking routes. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended, since the approach follows mountain paths with varying gradients.

A bit of history

The earliest documented transactions involving the castle date to the late 13th century: on 1 December 1284, Bernat de Peratallada, son of Gilabert IV de Cruïlles, purchased Castell de Montagut from Berenguer de Ros, a knight of the parish of Sant Feliu de Llagostera. In 1330, the fortress was bought by Bishop Gastó de Montcada, who later passed it on to his brother, Ot de Montcada i de Pinós, lord of Llagostera.

Since 2021, the Llagostera municipal government has been working to recover and consolidate the remains of the castle, with archaeologists carrying out excavations on the site with the landowners' permission, gradually uncovering more of its past.

When should you visit?

Given its exposed, elevated position, it's best to plan a visit on clear days, when the views toward the Pyrenees and the coast are at their fullest. Cooler seasons make for more comfortable hiking on the Ardenya massif's trails, away from the heat of a typical Catalan summer.
