About this place
Castell de Fluvià is a former fortified manor standing in the municipality of Sant Esteve de Palautordera, in the Vallès Oriental region of Catalonia. Also known as Casa de Palau, it is listed as a cultural asset of national interest and ranks among the oldest documented buildings in this part of Catalonia.
Where does the name come from and what is its history?
The building began life as a domus, a fortified house first recorded in 1154 under the Palau family. The estate fell under the jurisdiction of Montclús castle, with the Campins district in turn depending on it — a chain of feudal ties typical of the region in the Middle Ages.
Ownership moved through a series of marriages. In 1360 the Palau heiress, Blanca, married Ramon de Blanes, and in 1373 the property passed to their daughter, wife of Antoni de Torrelles. The Torrelles family held it until 1425, when Agnès de Torrelles married Joan de Fluvià — the union that gave the estate its present name, Castell de Fluvià. The Fluvià family kept the property until their line died out in 1837.
What will you see on site?
Very little of the original stronghold survives in its early form: in the 18th century the whole complex was rebuilt as a grand masia, the traditional Catalan manor farmhouse. The one element to have survived from the medieval castle is the chapel of Sant Cebrià, built in Lombard Romanesque style on a Latin-cross plan, with a single nave and a distinctive trefoil-shaped apse.
The next chapter opens in 1898, when the Adroer family bought the estate from the Count of Creixell and carried out a thorough restoration under architect Josep Azemar Font. A further renovation followed in 1966, after which the building took on its current role as a casa de colònies — a children's summer-camp house — and rural tourism accommodation, a function it still fulfils today.
How do you get there?
Castell de Fluvià sits on the outskirts of Sant Esteve de Palautordera, a small town in Vallès Oriental at the foot of the Montseny range. The easiest way in is by car, about an hour from Barcelona or a short drive from nearby Granollers. Because the building now operates as a summer-camp and agritourism venue, access to the interior is generally limited to guests staying there or groups on organised visits, so it is worth checking current visiting arrangements beforehand.
When should you visit?
The Montseny area is at its best in spring and autumn, when the surrounding hills and woodland look their most striking and temperatures are comfortable for walking. Summer tends to be warm, but it is also the season when the estate is busiest with camp groups, giving the surroundings a livelier feel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Castell de Fluvià still a defensive castle? Not in the literal sense. The 18th-century rebuilding erased almost all traces of the original stronghold, leaving only the Romanesque chapel of Sant Cebrià as a direct link to the medieval castle.
Why is the site known both as Castell de Fluvià and Casa de Palau? Casa de Palau reflects the first documented owners, the Palau family, recorded from 1154. The name Castell de Fluvià only appears after 1425, once the estate passed to the Fluvià family through the marriage of Agnès de Torrelles to Joan de Fluvià.
Can you visit the interior? The building currently functions as a children's camp house and rural tourism property, so access usually requires a stay or a booking — casual walk-in visits without prior arrangement may not be possible.
What else is worth combining with a visit? Sant Esteve de Palautordera sits right at the gateway to the Montseny Natural Park, making the range's hiking trails and the neighbouring towns of Vallès Oriental a natural addition to any visit.
