Castell d'Aguiló is a medieval fortress above the village of Aguiló, in the municipality of Santa Coloma de Queralt, in the Conca de Barberà region of Catalonia.
Where is the castle located?
The ruins crown a hilltop overlooking the village of Aguiló, part of the municipality of Santa Coloma de Queralt in Tarragona province. The surrounding area belongs to Conca de Barberà, a comarca known for the rolling valley of the Gaià river and a scattering of medieval strongholds on its hilltops. The castle is protected as a cultural asset of national interest (BCIN).
What is the history behind it?
The earliest record of the castle dates to the start of the 11th century, when it belonged to the Gurb-Cervelló family, lords of numerous castles along the middle and upper Gaià valley. In 1018, Hug de Cervelló divided his estate among his sons and passed the fortress to Alamany, continuing the Cervelló line that held the castle until the 13th century. By the 14th century, ownership had passed to Dalmau de Queralt, lord of Santa Coloma de Queralt and a descendant of the Timor family. The Queralt family kept control of the castle until 1842, when Joan Baptista de Queralt i Silva sold it to Joan Safont.
What will you see on site?
Enough survives to trace the original rectangular floor plan. The best-preserved feature is the tower at the south-west corner, together with the southern façade, which retains both a tower and battlements. Part of the eastern façade also remains standing. Sections of the walls have been consolidated, making it possible to read the old defensive layout even though much of the structure has been lost over the centuries.

The castle sits directly above the village of Aguiló, reached by a walking trail that also forms part of local routes linking Aguiló with the nearby Sant Jaume d'Almenara. Most visitors set out from Santa Coloma de Queralt, the municipal seat and a natural base for exploring the historic sites of Conca de Barberà.
When is the best time to visit?
Since this is an exposed hilltop ruin with no covered infrastructure, spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions, as inland Catalonia's summer heat can be intense. The lower, angled light of these seasons also brings out the Gaià valley and the surrounding hills of Conca de Barberà more vividly.
