Cascata of the Marmarico

Cascata del Marmarico in Bivongi is the tallest waterfall in Calabria and the entire Southern Apennines, where the Stilaro river drops 114 metres into the Folea valley within the Le Serre regional park, province of Reggio Calabria. The waterfall has been recognised as a Meraviglia italiana (Italian Marvel).

Cascata del Marmarico sits on the upper course of the Stilaro river, within the Ecomuseo delle ferriere e fonderie di Calabria in the municipality of Bivongi. Its 114-metre drop is a height record for the entire Southern Apennine range. The surrounding area is also notable for its flora: the rare fern Woodwardia Radicans grows along the upper Stilaro near the waterfall, alongside various orchid species, making it a rewarding stop for botanists.

Getting to the waterfall

No road leads to this remote location. From Bivongi, drive to the car park and picnic area near the restaurant La Vecchia Miniera, from where a jeep shuttle service runs up the steep dirt track. After the drop-off, a 20-minute walk through forest leads to the falls — cross the arched concrete footbridge and follow the red painted arrows. Sturdy footwear is required.

For those who prefer to walk the full route, the same restaurant serves as the trailhead; the uphill hike takes around 2 hours and is not recommended for young children, but rewards walkers with views across the Le Serre park. A clear natural pool at the base of the waterfall is suitable for swimming in warmer months.
