Cascata Forgiarelle

Cascata Forgiarelle in Samo, Calabria, is among the most celebrated waterfalls in the region — a series of drops on the Torrente Ferraina set inside the Parco Nazionale dell'Aspromonte at roughly 1,280 metres above sea level.

Rock, water, and ancient forest

The falls are also called Cascate del Ferraina, after the torrent that feeds them. The first and largest drop — the one that gives the cascade its proper name — falls 28 metres and ends in a small natural pool. Below it, the second drop splits into two parallel streams converging in a large basin where swimming is possible during the warm season. Further downstream the Ferraina produces additional drops ranging from 45 to 70 metres, all grouped under the name Cascate del Ferraina.

The trail threads through dense Calabrian larch forest (pino laricio) and passes centuries-old oak and beech trees, considered monumental trees of the Aspromonte.

Getting there

The trailhead is near the old Rifugio Cesaria, roughly 21.5 kilometres from the tourist centre of Gambarie. From there the path descends through forest to the bed of the Torrente Ferraina, then follows the stream to the falls — a walk of around 4 hours. The shelter of Canovai lies along the route. Excursions with expert guides operating within the National Park are strongly recommended given the remoteness of the terrain.

The falls lie close to the summit of Montalto (1,956 m), the highest peak in the Aspromonte.
