Cascata delle Marmore in Terni is the largest man-made waterfall in the world, standing 165 metres tall. It was created in 271 BC when Roman consul Manius Curius Dentatus ordered a canal (the Curiano Trench) to drain the stagnant Velino River over a cliff into the Nera River below. Today the water feeds the Galleto hydroelectric power plant (approx. 530 MW, operational since 1929), so the falls run on a fixed schedule — typically 12:00-13:00 and 16:00-17:00 daily, with extended hours on public holidays. The falls are located 7.7 km from Terni, in Umbria. Entrance is paid; a tunnel leads to an observatory directly beside the curtain of water.
