Cascata del Toce

Cascata del Toce in Formazza, also known as La Frua (Frütt Fall in Walser dialect), ranks among the tallest waterfalls in Europe and is considered one of the most spectacular cascades in the Alps. The river Toce is born on the Riale plateau from the confluence of three streams – Hosand, Gries and Rhoni – and then drops 143 metres over a rock face 60 metres wide. The waterfall stands at 1,675 metres above sea level in the hamlet of Frua, within the municipality of Formazza in Piedmont's Formazza Valley.

When does the waterfall run at full power?

For most of the year the Toce carries very little water past this point. The Morasco dam, located upstream, captures the river to supply a hydroelectric plant in the valley below. Water is released to flow over the falls only on selected days between June and September – the only period when the cascade appears in its full grandeur, with a roaring curtain of water and mist rising from the base. Before making the trip, check the current release schedule with the local tourist office.

How to visit

From the car park near the tunnel entrance to Frua, a gentle ten-minute walk leads to the base of the falls. This lower viewpoint captures the entire 143-metre drop and is the most dramatic vantage point. A wooden walkway built on the rocks beside the cascade provides an elevated view from above. Next to the walkway stands a historic hotel that has been welcoming visitors since 1863.

The circular trail

A circular hiking route of approximately 3.5 kilometres connects the lower and upper viewpoints through conifer forest with open views across the Formazza Valley. The trail is moderate in difficulty and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.

What else is there in the area? A few kilometres above Frua lies Lake Morasco, an artificial reservoir surrounded by alpine meadows. Formazza is also one of the main settlements of the Walser community – German-speaking settlers who arrived from Switzerland during the Middle Ages and whose traditional timber architecture and Germanic dialect remain part of the valley's character today.

Is a winter visit worthwhile? No – during winter months the Morasco reservoir is kept full for hydroelectric production and the waterfall carries almost no water. The only viable season for a visit is summer, from June to September.
