Cascada del Gollorio

Cascada del Gollorio is a seasonal waterfall inside the Barranco del Río Dulce Natural Park, in the municipality of Sigüenza (Guadalajara), close to the village of Pelegrina.

Where is the waterfall located?

The falls drop through the Gollorio ravine, a side tributary of the Dulce River, within the protected Barranco del Río Dulce Natural Park. The usual starting point for visitors is Pelegrina, a small, partly abandoned village a short drive from Sigüenza. With a drop estimated at around fifty metres, it ranks among the tallest waterfalls in the province of Guadalajara.

How do you get there?

Access starts in Pelegrina, reachable by car from Sigüenza. From the village, a signposted path — the Senda del Mirador de la Cascada del Gollorio — connects into a loop trail roughly 5.5 km long that most visitors can manage without technical difficulty. The final stretch leading to the viewpoint above the falls, however, is steep and needs care, especially after rain when the rock underfoot turns slippery. The park has marked out a mirador (lookout point) from which the cascade can be observed safely without approaching the edge of the ravine itself.

The trail follows the upper section of the Dulce River canyon, where the rock walls form natural nesting sites for birds of prey — griffon vultures and eagles can often be spotted circling above the gorge or perched on the ledges. Along the route stands a small building once used by naturalist Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente to store the filming equipment for his celebrated 1970s documentary series "El Hombre y la Tierra." The waterfall itself, sometimes called Cola de Caballo ("horsetail") for the shape of its falling water, is at its most dramatic after sustained rainfall, when the stream feeding the ravine fills up.

When is the best time to visit?

Cascada del Gollorio only flows in earnest from autumn through spring, once rain has replenished the sources that feed the ravine. In summer the streambed typically dries up almost completely, so the best strategy is to time a visit after a spell of heavy rain, ideally in winter or early spring. Checking recent weather and local reports on water levels before setting out is worthwhile, since after a dry stretch the cascade can disappear entirely.
