Casa-Museu Carlos Relvas

Golegã, Portugal

About this place

Casa-Museu Carlos Relvas (officially Casa-Estúdio Carlos Relvas) is a museum in Golegã, Portugal, devoted to the 19th-century photographer Carlos Relvas. It is one of the most unusual stops for anyone curious about the early days of photography, because the building was conceived from the start as a home fused with a working studio.

Who was Carlos Relvas?

Carlos Relvas (1838–1894) was born in Golegã into a wealthy aristocratic family. He was raised by private tutors and excelled at sports such as fencing and horseback riding. He was also known as a talented amateur bullfighter. In the end he gave his life to photography: taking pictures, processing them and exhibiting them. He is regarded as a pioneer of photography in Portugal.

What can you see here?

The building was constructed between 1871 and 1875 to Relvas's own concept. It has two floors. The ground floor held work rooms, laboratories and chambers for preparing photographic negatives. Upstairs is the photographic gallery, the studio proper, with a space for making up models and enormous windows. Its iron and glass structure supported curtains that regulated the light, moved by a system of ropes and pulleys. This gave the photographer control over illumination, which mattered a great deal when exposures depended on daylight.

Today the interiors let you understand how a photographer worked in the second half of the 19th century. You can see both the workshop and the mindset of a pioneer of a new technique.

Why visit?

Relvas put his knowledge of the then-new technique at the service of art. His photographs preserve evidence of many aspects of Portuguese life in the 19th century: he recorded writers, politicians and humble folk, as well as monuments, churches and villages. For visitors it is a chance to see an era through the eyes of a man with access to every layer of society of his time.

The studio was restored and converted into a museum, which opened to the public on 20 April 2007. The site is considered a unique monument of the early period of photography history, not only in Golegã or Portugal but worldwide.

Where is it and how to plan a visit

The museum stands on Largo D. Manuel I in the centre of Golegã, a small town in Portugal. It pairs well with a walk around the town. Before you go, check current opening hours and ticket prices on the official Golegã municipality website, as they may vary by season.
