About this place
Casa Museu Afonso Lopes Vieira is a house museum right by the Atlantic in São Pedro de Moel, in the municipality of Marinha Grande, central Portugal. The poet Afonso Lopes Vieira (1878–1946) lived and wrote here, and today his former residence lets visitors see his belongings and step inside rooms shaped by a well-known architect.
Who was Afonso Lopes Vieira, and why does this house matter?
Lopes Vieira was a Portuguese poet who wrote verse, plays and prose. His parents gave him the house in São Pedro de Moel in 1902 as a wedding present. He spent his holidays here and composed a large part of his work within these walls. The house was also a meeting place for writers and intellectuals, which makes it a notable spot on the map of early twentieth-century Portuguese literary life.
Who designed the building?
The architect was Raul Lino, one of the leading figures in Portuguese domestic architecture of the period. The house is known as the "Casa-Nau", roughly the "ship house", and the poet regarded it as his favourite place to create. Its position beside the sea clearly shapes the atmosphere.
What will you see inside?
The museum occupies the first floor of the main building. You will find the poet's personal objects, a collection of drawings, assorted artworks, and books of his poetry, theatre and prose. The complex also includes a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima, a patio, a garden and an annex that houses the former dormitories.
Why does a children's holiday camp share the house?
After the poet died, the house passed by will to the municipality of Marinha Grande. His wish was that it serve as a seaside holiday colony for the children of the municipality's workers and forest guards. The Colónia Balnear Afonso Lopes Vieira has operated since 1949 and uses part of the ground floor and the annex to the north. So this is still a living place, not only a museum.
Where is it and when can you visit?
The address is Rua Dr. Adolfo Leitão, São Pedro de Moel. Opening hours change with the season: in summer the house has opened Tuesday to Sunday, with a midday break. Before you go, check current details with the Marinha Grande municipality or a local tourist office.

Is it only a museum? No. A children's holiday colony operates on the ground floor, and the complex also has a chapel and a garden.
