About this place
Casa-Museu Abel Salazar is a house museum in São Mamede de Infesta, in the municipality of Matosinhos near Porto, in northern Portugal. It shows the world of a man who joined science and art: a biological researcher who was also a draughtsman, painter and sculptor. The museum is linked to the University of Porto.
Where is it and what is the building?
The museum stands on Rua Dr. Abel Salazar, within the united parish of São Mamede de Infesta and Senhora da Hora. The house is a typical "casa de brasileiro de torna viagem", a 19th-century home built by a Portuguese emigrant who came back from Brazil and wanted to show the wealth earned there. It was built on the former Quinta da Devesa estate, replacing an earlier manor from the Modern Age. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Apresentação survives from that older estate.
The surroundings carry older history too. The house lies along the route of an ancient Roman road and on the pilgrim path to Santiago de Compostela, so a visit fits neatly into a longer walk through the region's past.
What can you see?
The collections are spread over three floors and mostly reflect the artistic side of their owner. You will find sculptures, oil paintings, drawings and watercolours, plus engravings and hammered copper work. Alongside the art are manuscripts, correspondence, books and press material.
The first floor recreates the setting in which Abel Salazar lived, with his furniture and everyday objects. A visit feels closer to stepping into a private home than walking through a conventional gallery. The second floor is devoted to his work in the biological sciences and to personal belongings, showing how scientific research and artistic creation ran side by side.
