About this place

Casa Grande de Romarigães – the Aquilino Ribeiro manor in Paredes de Coura

Casa Grande de Romarigães is a historic manor complex in the village of Romarigães, in the municipality of Paredes de Coura, northern Portugal (Viana do Castelo District). It consists of the main house, its farm outbuildings and the Baroque Capela do Amparo. The estate is also known as Quinta do Amparo and is tied to one of the notable figures of Portuguese literature.

What is Casa Grande de Romarigães?

It is a former country estate in the south-west of Paredes de Coura, in the Alto Minho region. The complex includes the manor house, the buildings once used for agricultural work, and a chapel. Together they show how a rural estate functioned: the family home stood beside the working farm, and worship took place in a private chapel.

What is the history of the estate?

Quinta do Amparo dates back to 1618, when Gonçalo da Cunha established an entailed estate (a Portuguese vínculo) dedicated to Our Lady of Protection (Nossa Senhora do Amparo). According to an inscription, the chapel was built in 1700. The house later became a family home linked to the political and literary life of the country.

Why is the place famous in literature?

The manor is linked above all to the writer Aquilino Ribeiro, author of the novelised chronicle "A Casa Grande de Romarigães", first published in 1957. The house described in the book was the home of Bernardino Machado, a former President of Portugal. Aquilino Ribeiro married Machado's daughter, so the lives of two prominent men met here.

What should you look for at the Capela do Amparo?

The chapel is the highlight of the complex. According to the scholar António Ferreira de Almeida, its Baroque façade is unmatched for sculptural quality across the whole of Alto Minho. It is decorated with niches, statues, grotesque faces, scrolls, pediments and an oculus, all carved from local stone. It is worth taking a moment to study the details up close.

Restoration and present condition

After years of neglect, the buildings were restored. In 2021 the municipality of Paredes de Coura began works aimed at turning the site into a museum space, and they were completed in May 2023. Before visiting, check current opening hours and visiting rules with the municipality or the local tourist office.
