About this place
Casa de Camilo Castelo Branco is a house museum in São Miguel de Seide, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão in northern Portugal. It was the home of writer Camilo Castelo Branco, one of the leading figures of Portuguese Romanticism. The building is a protected cultural heritage monument and a natural stop for literature lovers.
Whose house was it?
The house was built around 1830 by Pinheiro Alves, the first husband of Ana Plácido, after he returned from Brazil with a considerable fortune. Over time it became the setting for the life of Camilo and his long-term partner. The writer lived here from 1863 to 1890.
Why does it matter for literature?
Camilo wrote a large part of his output in Seide: novels, short stories and journalism, and his name belongs to the Portuguese literary canon. The house is also where he died. On 1 June 1890 the writer, widowed and left blind, took his own life. That history gives the rooms a serious, reflective atmosphere.
Fire and reconstruction
A fire destroyed the original building in 1915. The house was rebuilt and opened to visitors in 1922 as the Museu Camiliano. A later inauguration in 1958, led by Marcelo Caetano, established its role as the Casa-Museu de Camilo. Keep in mind that today you see a reconstructed residence, not the house as it stood before the fire.
What will you see inside?
The exhibition includes the writer's furniture and personal belongings, which help you picture his daily life. There is also a valuable library collection, including books written in this very house. The site works as a study centre for Camilo's work too, so it attracts researchers as well as tourists.
Planning your visit
The house stands in the village of São Miguel de Seide, a few kilometres from the centre of Vila Nova de Famalicão. Driving is the easiest way to get there. A visit usually takes about an hour, longer if you read the displays and care about the author's biography. Check opening hours and ticket prices with the municipality or a tourist office before you go, as they can change.
