Carpinone waterfall

Cascate di Carpinone is a series of waterfalls in the Molise region, tucked in the valley of the Carpino River near the medieval village of Carpinone in the Province of Isernia.

What Will You See?

The main cascade drops roughly 20 metres, forming a striking curtain of water surrounded by dense woodland. Below the main falls, the Carpino River — which originates on the slopes of Monte Totila — creates a sequence of smaller ledges and clear natural pools. A second highlight is the Cascata Schioppo, a smaller and more secluded waterfall set in a side arm of the valley. The paths connecting the individual cascades are easy to walk and require no climbing experience.

How to Get There?

The trailhead starts in Carpinone, around 20 km east of Isernia. A car is the most practical way to arrive — from the village centre the walk to the waterfalls takes about 15–20 minutes. Entry is free. There are no refreshment points along the route, so bring water and snacks.

When to Visit?

Spring and early summer are the best seasons, when snowmelt from Monte Totila feeds the river and the falls are at their most powerful. In summer the natural pools attract visitors looking to cool off. Autumn brings rich foliage colours to the valley and noticeably fewer crowds on the trail.

Carpinone itself is a small village with a well-preserved medieval core. The Caldora Castle dominates the hilltop above — originally built in the 11th century, demolished in 1223 and rebuilt in the 14th century. The building is currently closed to the public due to its structural condition. Isernia, the nearest city, is home to a palaeolithic museum containing some of the oldest traces of human presence in Italy.

Practical Tips

Sturdy hiking shoes are advisable — the stony approach and wet rocks near the cascades can be slippery. In summer, starting early in the morning is a good idea before the heat builds up. Parking is available at the entrance to Carpinone village.
