Capela de Nossa Senhora da Orada (São Vicente da Beira)

Castelo Branco, Portugal

About this place

Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Orada is a rural chapel in São Vicente da Beira, in the municipality of Castelo Branco, central Portugal. It is listed as a cultural heritage monument, and its appeal rests on living tradition: an annual pilgrimage and a local legend about a Marian apparition.

Where is the chapel?

The chapel sits outside the built-up core of São Vicente da Beira, in the Beira Baixa region, at roughly 40.061 N, 7.559 W. A fenced precinct surrounds it and hosts the yearly festivities. Do not confuse it with the shrine of the same name in Melgaço, far to the north. That is an entirely different place.

What is the legend?

Villagers tell of a young local woman whose belly swelled alarmingly. Her father assumed she was pregnant and led her into a wild, wooded spot, leaving her for the animals. She prayed, and the Virgin Mary appeared. She explained that a snake, not a child, caused the swelling, and told the girl to warm some milk, which would draw the snake out through her mouth. It happened exactly so. In gratitude, the father built a chapel on the spot, dedicated it to Nossa Senhora da Orada and placed the snake's skin inside.

A similar apparition tale featuring a young unmarried woman was also recorded in a 2004 collection of folk literature from the Gardunha area.

When is the pilgrimage?

The romaria honouring Nossa Senhora da Orada takes place every year on the fourth Sunday of May. Local tradition places its origins in the 14th or 15th century, although the exact beginning is not documented. This is the best day to see the chapel full of people and to experience how Portuguese villages celebrate a religious festival. Outside May the site is quiet and peaceful.

What will you see?

  • A small chapel within a fenced festival ground
  • A cross marking the place of the apparition
  • A spring in the rocky area known as the Fraga, close by
  • Picnic tables and drinking water nearby

This is a stop for anyone who likes local folklore and a calm walk, not a full-scale sightseeing site. Sources say little about the interior or architecture, so do not expect rich furnishings.

How to prepare

Parking is available nearby, and you can arrive by bicycle. Depending on the season the ground can be wet, so wear sturdy boots, and bring a flashlight. A picnic at the tables beside the chapel is a natural way to end the visit.
