Can Barris is a large rural estate — a traditional Catalan masia — in the municipality of Darnius, in the Alt Empordà region of Girona province, Catalonia. It sits among wooded hills at the foot of the Catalan Pyrenees, close to the French border, in a landscape of meadows, forest and small rivers typical of this corner of Catalonia.

Where is Can Barris located?

What can you see from the property?

From Can Barris, the ruins of Mont-roig castle are visible, perched on the summit of the mountain of the same name (301 metres), between the Ricardell and Llobregat river valleys, about 4 kilometres from Darnius. The castle was first documented in 1070, under the name "Monte Rogo", and belonged to the lords of Darnius. A 1359 tax record notes eight families living there. The building was badly damaged in the 15th century, later restored, and finally abandoned after the War of the Pyrenees (1793–1795). Today only stretches of wall and the remains of three towers survive; the mountain's reddish name comes from the clay soil and the tone it gives the stone. The ruins can be reached along a forest track linking Darnius and Biure, with the final stretch covered on foot.

What else is worth seeing in Darnius?

In the village centre stands the church of Santa Maria, dating back to the 12th–13th centuries. Nearby is the Darnius-Boadella reservoir, built in 1969 to generate hydroelectric power and supply water to Figueres and the surrounding farmland. Today it's a popular spot for swimming, fishing and kayaking. The Salines-Bassegoda mountain-bike route also runs through the area, drawing cyclists from further afield.
