About this place
Câmara Municipal de Vila Nova de Cerveira is the town hall of Vila Nova de Cerveira, a small town in northern Portugal on the Spanish border. The seat of local government stands in the newer part of town, close to the Jardim de Chagny garden and the Auditório Municipal (coordinates 41.9393 N, 8.7440 W). It is a working office rather than a sight, but it fits naturally into a walk through the centre.
What is a Câmara Municipal?
In Portugal the Câmara Municipal is the executive body of a municipality (concelho), and its building is often called the Paços do Concelho. In Cerveira it houses the municipal administration, and its ceremonial hall, the salão nobre, also hosts sessions of the municipal assembly. Visitors come here for official business or to find out what is going on in the municipality.
Where was the original town hall?
The old town hall was somewhere else entirely. It sits inside the walls of Cerveira's castle and dates from the 16th century. The same walled enclosure held the Misericórdia church, a courthouse, a prison and dwellings. In front of the old hall stands the pelourinho, a 15th-century stone pillory that symbolised the town's municipal rights. The current seat is the next chapter in a local government story that began behind fortress walls.
What can you see nearby?
- The castle and old core. You enter through a gate topped by the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, built in 1650 and decorated with fine azulejo tiles. Inside are the Misericórdia church, the former town hall and the pelourinho.
- Town history. King Dinis granted Cerveira its charter (foral) in 1321, a period when the castle and settlement grew considerably.
- Jardim de Chagny and the Auditório Municipal. Right next to the town hall, a pleasant spot for a short break.
How to get there and when to go
The building is in the town centre, an easy walk from the castle and the riverfront. As with most Portuguese public offices, weekday working hours are the best time to visit. Check cm-vncerveira.pt for current opening times. There is no ticketed attraction here, and a visit takes a few minutes.
