Cal Torres

Cal Torres, also known as Casa Torres Amat, is a historic house in the town of Sallent, in the Bages county of Barcelona province, Catalonia. It stands on Carrer del Pont, close to the Llobregat river, and is listed in Catalonia's Inventory of Architectural Heritage.

How do you get there?

Sallent sits on the banks of the Llobregat in central Catalonia, a short drive from Manresa and reachable from Barcelona by car or by regional train following the river valley. Once in town, the house is only a few minutes' walk from the main square, close to the old bridge that gave the street its name.

The Torres family's ties to Sallent go back to 1252, and by the 16th century they already held extensive farmland around the town. The house grew in stages over the following centuries. Joan de les Torras, born in 1567, had the vaulted cellars built, one of which still bears the carved date 1625. His son Miquel de las Torras, born in 1633, added a new arched doorway and windows, with the year 1683 engraved on one of the lintels. In 1740, the marriage of Rosa Torras i Solà to Jaume Cererols funded the oval dome that crowns the main staircase, still one of the most distinctive features of the interior today.

The building now operates as the Casa Museu Torres Amat, a museum dedicated to the family and to Sallent's history. A short walk away, on the riverbank, stands the old Cal Torres factory (also called Fàbrica Torres Amat), a 19th-century mill powered by the Llobregat. It was there that the first mechanical loom on the entire Iberian Peninsula was installed, a milestone that places Sallent among Catalonia's earliest industrial sites. The former factory building now houses the town's public library.
