About this place
Buksnes Church (Buksnes kirke) is a red wooden church in the village of Gravdal on the island of Vestvågøya, in the Lofoten archipelago of northern Norway. Completed in 1905, it remains one of the most distinctive buildings in this part of the island. It belongs to the Church of Norway and serves as the church of the Buksnes parish.
What does Buksnes Church look like?
The building is designed in the so-called dragon style (Norwegian: dragestil), which draws on older Norwegian timber building traditions and is known for its decorative, soaring rooflines. The church has a longitudinal plan, is built entirely of wood and painted red, which looks striking against the rugged Lofoten landscape. It seats about 600 people, a large number for an island parish.
Who designed the church?
The plans were drawn up by the architect Karl Norum. In 1886 he was employed by the firm of Jakob Digre, which produced prefabricated villas in the dragon style. Norum also designed the Neiden Chapel, the other dragon-style church in northern Norway. That makes Buksnes a valued example of an architectural style that is rare in this region.
What is known about the history of the site?
The Buksnes parish appears in written sources as early as 1324. The earliest known written mention of a church on this spot dates from 1589. Archaeological finds on the old vicarage grounds reach back to the Middle Ages and even the Viking era. Local tradition speaks of churches standing here since about 1100, but this is not documented.
Earlier churches suffered from the exposed, storm-prone site, and the 1905 building replaced a structure that had become unstable. The parish vicar had a keen interest in architecture and pushed for a modern design, which is how a church in the fashionable style of the day came about.
What can you see inside?
The pulpit and altarpiece date from 1905, the year of construction. The organ is newer, installed in 1998. The church is a protected, listed building and was restored in 1967.
