Budačina

Halenkovice, Czechia

About this place

Budačina is a rocky nature reserve tucked into the valley of the Kudlovice brook near the village of Halenkovice in the Zlín District, within the Chřiby hills of Moravia. Covering barely 8 hectares, this small but striking sandstone formation has been protected as a natural monument since 1966.

What is there to see at Budačina?

The heart of the reserve is a cluster of four large sandstone and conglomerate rocks, shaped back in the Pleistocene era. The tallest and most impressive of them, known as Velká skála (the Great Rock), rises 12 metres high and spans 15 metres in width, forming a dramatic focal point against the surrounding forest slope. Together, the rocks create a compact rocky ridge above the valley, quite distinct from the gentler landscape typical of the region.

A cave and a robbers' legend

One of the rocks conceals a small, roughly 5-metre-long fissure cave of pseudokarst origin. According to local legend, this narrow cave once served as a hideout for robbers back in the 16th century — some versions of the tale even name the figures of Ondrášek and Jurášek, well-known characters from Moravian folklore. While the historical accuracy of the story is hard to confirm, the cave remains one of the most visited spots in the reserve, and the legend adds a layer of mystery to an already atmospheric place.

A place of historical memory

Budačina is not only about geology and folklore — it also carries a more solemn historical dimension. In one of the reserve's ravines stands a bronze memorial plaque dedicated to Antonín Rozsypál, who died in the Mauthausen concentration camp in 1942. The plaque is a quiet but meaningful reminder of the wartime history tied to this corner of Moravia.

How to get to Budačina

The reserve lies roughly three hundred metres from the road connecting Kudlovice and Kostelany, right in the middle of the Chřiby hills. Several marked trails pass through or near the area, including the Spáčil Trail and the Cyril and Methodius Trail, as well as blue- and red-marked hiking routes. This makes Budačina an easy target for a short walking trip that can be combined with visits to the neighbouring villages of Halenkovice and Kudlovice.

Why visit Budačina?

Budačina brings together several qualities rarely found in one small site: distinctive geology in the form of Pleistocene sandstone rocks with a pseudokarst cave, local folklore tied to legends of robbers, and a quiet historical memory of wartime victims. Despite its modest size, it offers visitors more than just a scenic rock formation — it captures the spirit of the Chřiby hills as a region layered with history, legend, and natural curiosities.
