About this place
Břestecká skála is a nature reserve in the Chřiby hills of Moravia, roughly 1.5 km northwest of the village of Břestek in the Uherské Hradiště district. The protected area was established in 2002 and covers 4.1 hectares, at elevations between 280 and 400 metres above sea level, on the southern slope of the Komínek hill.
What can visitors see there?
The centrepiece of the reserve is a group of jagged sandstone rocks rising from the forested slope. Their irregular, craggy shapes are the result of wind and water erosion acting on soft sedimentary rock over thousands of years. The rocks are surrounded by woodland, so the site combines geological interest with ecological value in a single small area.
Why is the site protected?
The reserve was declared primarily to protect a notable geomorphological formation formed by the sandstone outcrops. Beyond its landscape value, the area also safeguards relict stands of Scots pine and a fragment of original Carpathian oak-hornbeam forest. This forest type, once typical of eastern Moravia, has given way to managed forestry in many places, which makes the surviving patches here ecologically significant.
What plants grow on the rocks?
The rock ledges and their immediate surroundings support plants adapted to dry, nutrient-poor rocky habitats. Species recorded here include rock garlic, rock ferns, the Carthusian pink, orpine (large stonecrop), and common rockrose. Their presence points to a distinct microclimate on the sun-exposed, dry rock surfaces, different from the shaded forest around them.
Are there traces of earlier settlement nearby?
Traces of prehistoric settlement, dating from both the Old and New Stone Age, have been found in the area around Břestecká skála. This suggests that the natural shelter offered by the rocks and the favourable location attracted human activity here long before recorded history.
What else is worth seeing nearby?
Břestecká skála sits close to other attractions in the Chřiby region. Buchlov Castle, one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Moravia, lies within easy reach, as does the Barborka nature reserve. This makes it simple to combine a visit to Břestecká skála with other stops, turning it into a longer hiking route through the Chřiby hills.
