Brgud

Brgud is a peak in the Učka mountain range, within the municipality of Općina Mošćenička Draga in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Rising to nearly 900 metres above sea level, it's a favourite launch point for hikers and paragliders exploring Učka Nature Park.

Where is Brgud and how do you get there?

Brgud sits inland behind the coastal town of Mošćenička Draga, a short drive southwest of Opatija. It forms part of the Učka ridge, the highest mountain range on the Istrian peninsula, running north-south along Kvarner Bay all the way to Plomin Bay. The most straightforward approach is on foot from either Mošćenice or Mošćenička Draga itself, following trails that climb steeply through forest before opening onto the bare ridge. Drivers can also head to the small hamlet of Brgud by local road and continue the last stretch on foot.

The summit is marked by a stone statue of the Virgin Mary, alongside stone tables and benches where hikers traditionally stop to rest. Because of its open, wind-exposed terrain, Brgud is one of the official take-off sites for paragliding and hang-gliding within Učka Nature Park, so it's not unusual to share the ridge with pilots preparing to launch. The grassy summit opens up views toward Kvarner Bay and across to Vojak (1394 m), the highest peak of the entire Učka range, visible looming over the surrounding terrain.

Brgud sits at the junction of several marked trails. One popular loop links Mošćenice – Brgud – Mala Učka – Trebišća – Mošćenička Draga – Mošćenice, connecting the coastal towns with the mountain ridge above them. A tougher option is the Plomin – Sisol – Mala Učka – Vojak route, which also passes through Brgud on its way to the range's highest point — best suited to hikers with solid fitness and mountain trail experience. Given the elevation gain and wooded sections, sturdy hiking boots and enough water are essential, as there are no reliable water sources along the way.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for climbing Brgud, offering mild temperatures and generally clearer visibility. In summer the trail can get hot and exposed, so an early start is worth planning. Down at the coast, Mošćenička Draga itself grew out of a former fishing harbour belonging to Mošćenice and today functions as a classic Kvarner seaside resort, with two beaches, a small marina and seafront promenades — making it easy to pair a summit hike with a swim afterwards.
