About this place
Brániska is a small protected natural monument located about 1 km northwest of Plumlov, in the Prostějov district of Moravia, Czech Republic. Covering just 1.94 hectares, the site sits at an elevation between 318 and 334 meters above sea level, within the Drahany Uplands (Drahanská vrchovina), specifically in its foothill zone known as Drahanské podhůří.
What is Brániska?
Brániska is a grassy steppe growing on a steep, south-facing slope — a patch of vegetation unusual for this part of Moravia, adapted to dry, sun-exposed conditions. The site was first placed under protection by a ministerial decree on 21 July 1952, with the protection status revised the following year, on 4 May 1953. Under the IUCN international classification system, Brániska falls into Category IV, meaning it is managed as a habitat and species management area.
Why is this site protected?
The reserve exists to protect a grassy steppe hosting a number of significant plant species. The slope's steep, south-facing orientation causes the soil to heat up and dry out quickly, favoring vegetation typical of steppe and dry grassland habitats — a rarity in this part of Moravia. It is precisely on the sunniest sections of the slope that drought-tolerant plants flourish most abundantly.
What can visitors see here?
Despite its small size, Brániska is home to more than 30 documented plant species. Among them are thistle species, scattered pine and aspen trees, St. John's wort, goat's beard, numerous stonecrop (sedum) species, and a variety of meadow and steppe wildflowers. This mix of vegetation makes Brániska an interesting stop for anyone interested in botany or nature photography, even given the site's modest footprint.
How to get to Brániska?
A field path connects the reserve to the road between Plumlov and Vícov. The site is open to hikers and cyclists, but motor vehicle access is restricted, which helps protect the fragile steppe vegetation from damage.
What else to see nearby?
Brániska lies right next to Plumlov, a town best known for its baroque castle and the nearby Plumlov Reservoir (Plumlovská přehrada), a popular destination for hikers and cyclists in the Drahany Uplands region. Given the short distance from town, a walk to Brániska can easily be combined with a visit to the castle or a loop around the reservoir.
