Božkovské jezírko

Božkovské jezírko

Mirošovice, Czechia

About this place

Božkovské jezírko is a small nature lake tucked between the villages of Božkov and Mirošovice, in the Prague-East district of the Central Bohemian Region. The pond formed over an impermeable subsoil and is fed mainly by rainwater, which has allowed a genuine wetland habitat to survive in an otherwise heavily farmed landscape. The water surface covers roughly 0.554 ha, stretching about 110 metres in length and 60 metres in width.

Why was the site protected?

In 1988 the lake and its surrounding woodland were declared a natural monument covering a total area of 1.29 ha. The designation reflects the habitat value of the site rather than any scenic or geological feature — the fields and managed forests nearby have long lost their natural character, leaving this pocket of wetland as one of the few places in the area where waterbirds and amphibians can still find undisturbed conditions for feeding and breeding. The lake is ringed by damp meadows, scrub and patches of forest that together sustain a modest but valuable ecosystem.

How can visitors experience the reserve?

Because of its protected status, the site is not open for free access to the shoreline. Visitors can only view the lake from its edge, following cycle route 0020, which runs along the reserve's western boundary. This setup lets cyclists and walkers pass close to the site while keeping the core habitat undisturbed. Bringing binoculars is worthwhile — the surrounding vegetation makes it possible to watch waterbirds from a respectful distance without startling them.

What should you know before visiting?

This is a quiet, nature-focused stop rather than a fully equipped tourist attraction — there are no cafés, visitor centres or marked footpaths leading directly to the water. It works best as a short detour for people already cycling through the Mirošovice area, rather than as a standalone day-trip destination. The most rewarding time to visit is spring and early summer, when amphibian and waterbird activity peaks and the vegetation around the lake is at its fullest.

Frequently asked questions

Can visitors walk right up to the shore? No — the area is protected as a natural monument, and access is limited to observation from the surrounding cycle path.

How do you get to Božkovské jezírko? The easiest way is by bike or on foot along cycle route 0020, which skirts the western edge of the reserve near Mirošovice and Božkov.

When was the lake given protected status? It was declared a natural monument in 1988, with the protected area totalling 1.29 ha.

What wildlife can be found here? The reserve mainly shelters waterbirds and amphibians, species that struggle to find suitable habitat in the surrounding intensively used countryside.

Is there any tourist infrastructure on site? No, it is a small natural area without services — the appeal lies in observing an intact patch of wetland close to Prague rather than in facilities.
