Bikuña jauregia

Bikuña jauregia (Palacio de Bikuña) is a stone tower-house belonging to the local nobility, standing in Arraioz, a village in the Baztan valley in northern Navarre. It sits right next to the parish church and is considered the oldest of the three surviving noble residences in the village.

What kind of building is it?

Bikuña is a classic casa-torre, the fortified tower-house that noble families across the Basque Country and Navarre built from the medieval period onward to display their rank and privileges. In Basque the building is also called Jauregiberri, meaning "new palace" — a name used to distinguish it from the nearby Jauregizarrea, the "old palace" of Arraioz. The name Bikuña comes from the family that built and held the estate for centuries.

What does it look like?

The building survives in good condition, with the restrained, elegant architecture typical of Navarrese fortified manors.
